Quick information on Portugal ....
Southwest of Europe lies the Iberian Peninsula, which Portugal and Spain share. Portugal is only a good sixth the size of Spain with an area of around 89000km². The coasts of Portugal lie on the Atlantic ocean, and alternate between steep coasts, kilometers long sand beaches and nature preservation areas. A paradise for beach vacationers, water sport athletes and hikers.
Aside from the ALGARVE, which is unfortunately quite overrun with tourism in the summer, the coasts around Lisboa- the Costa de Lisboa and the Costa Azul (south between Lisboa and Setubal, around the fishing and vacationing area of Sesimbra)- belong to the most beautiful coastal region of Portugal. Also advantageous is the area of the multi-cultural world-culture-city of Lisboa, with its international airport, a cultural offer, and the many shops and street cafè’s. You may also find here the largest shopping center of Europe, the Colombo.

Entry/Customs
For those who live within the EU, it is enough to enter the country with only a valid passport or personal identity card, which is still valid for 3 months. For children, a child’s identity card (from 10 years old with photo) and the entry "German Nationality", a passport or an entry in the family’s passport is necessary. In reference to the EU, goods for personal use are not to be duty-paid.
Holiday Season and the Climate of Lisboa and Sesimbra
The most beautiful holiday season is from May to October, but also in January when spring already begins here. Nevertheless, it should not be kept a secret that there is also a winter season in Portugal, which can begin in November with storms and rain. Yet, in between, there are always beautiful sunny days.
Local time/Language
Portugal is one hour behind Germany (time-wise). The official language of Portugal is Portuguese. Occasionally there is German spoken, however English is predominant.
Pets
Pets are unwelcome in many hotels. In most of the public transportation services, stores, restaurants and beaches, pets are not allowed. It is advised to take a carrier bag for smaller animals with you. It is frequent that smaller animals are over-looked by many places. Also, on the official beach of Sesimbra, dogs are not allowed. There are, however, several Tascas and restaurants which tolerate guests with pets.
Official Holidays
January (New Year’s), Mardi Gras, Good Friday, April 25th (Day of Freedom), May 1st (Labor Day), Corpus Christi, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin (August 15th), All Saints’ Day, December 25th (Christmas), June 10th (National Holiday), October 5th (Day of the Republic), and December 1st (Independence Day). Furthermore, there are many local holidays. .
